Montana State University Prestigious Awards

The Blue and Gold Award is the most prestigious award granted by Montana State University.  It honors an individual who has rendered great lifetime service or who has brought national or international distinction to MSU or to the state of Montana.  The candidate must have achieved prominence through service to one or a combination of profession, family, country, world, university, philanthropy or humanity.  Recipients of the Blue and Gold Award are recommended by the MSU Alumni Association Board of Directors, to the President of the University.

The Montana State University Alumni Achievement Award (created Spring 1999) will be given to alumni of Montana State University who have distinguished themselves through significant achievement in a specific field or endeavor.  These efforts reflect greatly on MSU and make her proud to have such a person associated with Montana State University. 

Award recipients of the Alumni Achievement Award will be selected by an Alumni Association appointed committee or by the MSUAA Board of Directors. Nominations for both the Blue and Gold Award and the Alumni Achievement Award can be made by Montana State University alumni, faculty, friends and students.  These prestigious awards will be presented to selected honorees at the Awards Ceremony during Homecoming weekend.

Blue and Gold Award

The Blue and Gold Award is the most prestigious award granted by Montana State University.  It honors an individual who has rendered great lifetime service or who has brought national or international distinction to Montana State University or to the state of Montana.  The candidate must have achieved prominence through service to one or a combination of profession, family, country, world, university, philanthropy or humanity.

Nominations for the Blue and Gold Award can be made by Montana State University alumni, faculty, friends and students.

The Blue and Gold Award is given when the individual meets the unique qualifications established in the award criteria, and is not necessarily awarded on an annual basis.

The Blue and Gold Award recipient need not have attended Montana State University.

The MSU Alumni Association Board of Directors makes recommendations to the MSU President, who, in turn, selects the Blue and Gold Award recipient.

The Blue and gold Award will be presented at the Awards Ceremony at Homecoming.  If appropriate, awards will be presented at another commemorative event.

Faculty and staff of MSU and University Board members are ineligible to receive the Blue and Gold Award in their term of service.

Guidelines for nominating candidates for the Blue and Gold Award
Include in nominating material:

  1. Personal Data of nominee, including information on family, current activities, hobbies, travels.
  2. Career, vocation or life pursuits to include activities leading toward a successful career; papers and writing for journals, magazines, books; awards and recognitions received during career for outstanding service and accomplishments.
  3. Connection with MSU to include specific activities that have strengthened ties with MSU and/or improved some aspects of the quality of education within the university; listing membership on task forces, boards, committees, or groups enhancing the overall university environment and any other support.
  4. National, regional, state, and local pursuits, which render service should be noted.
  5. Leadership roles that have helped others.
  6. Any other worthy cause or diverse activity leading toward achievement and prominence in community or within the scope of the university.
  7. Any other supportive material, like letters of recommendation, to strengthen this nomination.


Alumni Achievement Award

The Alumni Achievement Award is given to alumni of Montana State University who have distinguished themselves through significant achievement in a specific field or endeavor.  Nominations for the Alumni Achievement Award will be most appropriate for those individuals who have distinguished themselves through professional achievement, for those with an outstanding record of service to his or her community, state or humankind, and for alumni who have provided great service to Montana State University.

Nominations for the Alumni Achievement Award can be made by Montana State University alumni, faculty, friends and students.

The MSU Alumni Association Board of Directors or an appointed committee selects the Alumni Achievement Award recipient.

The Alumni Achievement award will be presented at the Awards Ceremony at Homecoming. If appropriate, awards will be presented at another commemorative event.  As many as three alumni may receive this award in any given year.

Faculty and staff of MSU and University Board members are ineligible to receive the Alumni Achievement Award in their term of service.

Nominees may be more appropriately considered for the Blue and Gold Award, upon receipt of the nomination materials.
