Foundation Notes — College of Business
The National Science Foundation recently awarded a $600,000 grant to the MSU College of Business Center for Entrepreneurship for the New West and its two Bozeman-based partners, TechRanch and TechLink. The Center will receive $116,500, with the balance of the grant going to the other two businesses. The program partners resources and students from the college with entrepreneurs and resources at TechRanch and TechLink. The students help the entrepreneurs, who could significantly contribute to the economic development of Montana, with research and marketing skills while this educational framework provides an outstanding learning experience for the MSU-Bozeman students.
"We are honored that the National Science Foundation has found our program in entrepreneurship worthy of funding. This is one of the most prestigious federal funding agencies and their standards are very, very high," said Richard Semenik, dean of the College of Business.
MSU accounting students did it again. On the May 2002 CPA exam, 78.1 percent of the College of Business accounting students passed the entire test on the first try. This is significantly higher than the national average of about 15 percent.
Of the 32 students who took the exam this year, 25 passed the test completely, while the other seven passed two or three parts, which means they will only have to take a portion of the test again. Many of the students commented to their advisors that in comparing notes with other schools, they felt more prepared and confident taking the test.

From 1982-2000, MSU students have been ranked 14 times in the top 10 schools in the nation for a first-time pass rate. This includes seven years of being ranked in the top three. In 1991, 1995 and 1996, the MSU students had the top pass rate in the nation.
Gil Crain (center), associate professor of accounting, and some of his students were featured in the July 2002 Governmental Accounting Standards Series publication.
Carrie Hageman, a 2001 MPAc graduate, had the highest CPA exam score in Montana in May 2001.
The success of the MSU students was reported in the August/September 2002 publication of the Montana Society of Certified Public Accountants. The article touted the excellence of the students: "This success is not new to MSU students. The College of Business has a long history of consistently having one of the highest CPA pass rates in the nation according to the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy, which compiles and publishes pass rates by universities each year." MSU accounting students continue to find excellent career opportunities. Approximately 65 percent of the students begin their careers with national and international public accounting firms. Congratulations to all of the accounting students and accounting faculty who worked hard for this honor.
