Foundation Notes — College of Arts & Architecture
Gallatin County's theatre production companies joined together this summer to create the Bozeman Theatre Guild. With fear that the Mainstage Theatre in the SUB, one of the state's best mid-sized stages, could possibly be remodeled into a ballroom, the guild's first successful initiative has been to work with Montana State University to make the Mainstage Theatre in the Strand Union Building available for non-university performances. Through a partnership with the Dept. of Media & Theatre Arts, a full performance schedule for the 2002-3 season has been created - including 11 theatre companies and over 40 performances in the Mainstage Theatre Season. Students are involved in each production at some level.
To underwrite the season, the guild is hosting two special performances made up of the "Best of Bozeman" - short productions by Guild theatre companies. The extravaganza promises to bring you Bozeman's top comedy, drama and musical theatre performances packed into two evenings, Nov. 8-9. Friday, Nov. 8, is the gala event with valet parking, cocktail intermission and special guests. Reserve tickets in advance. Call 994-3902 for more information. The proceeds will underwrite the season as well as cover equipment essentials such as lighting and electrical. Additionally, the Guild hopes to invest in the theatre seats, which are in desperate need of reupholstering.
This summer the new art studios, former swine barns, were stripped bare. Students started moving into their new studios in October.
Did you participate in theatre at Montana State? Writer Marjorie Smith is compiling a history of the 45-year-old Mainstage Theatre and is looking for anecdotes, photos and programs. If you would like to share your thoughts, e-mail Smith at yokoi@mcn.net.
Visiting professor Rick Rosenthal, in the MFA Science and Natural History Filmmaking Program, recently won an Emmy Award for his work on "Blue Planet: Seas Of Life." He was honored in the Outstanding Cinematography for Non-Fiction Programming category. The Discovery Corporation funds the MFA program and students have the opportunity to create films to air on one of the Discovery television stations.
The newly renovated Senska Wilber Graduate Art Studios will be completed this month. The students anxiously await move-in day and look forward to calling the facility "home" through their academic career at MSU. Faculty look forward to the new space as well as the gallery/classroom space in the middle of the studios.
The College of Arts and Architecture has several other community/outreach activities. The President's Fine Arts Series has just begun - with activities ranging from an architectural home tour to the Montana Mandolin Society to a lecture by one of the Northwest's top graphic designers, Jack Anderson, '75. A total of nine events culminate in the Dessert for the Spirit, a montage of arts and sweets. Additionally, we are currently coordinating the schedule for ArtsLink, Montana's premier summer high school arts education program. We are seeking teacher fellows from around the state.
