| John
Cassidy, '52 CE and wife Alice (Willman) '55
Nurs, Walnut Creek, Calif., are volunteers with the American
Red Cross Disaster Service Human Resources (DSHR). They
are also members of the local Disaster Action Team (DAT).
John and Alice were called on to help out in New York
after 9/11. They were there for three weeks and helped
in serving victims, including family members who lost
someone in the disaster. Alice worked first providing
nursing services at Respite 3 which was alongside the
hole that was the World Trade Center. The respite center
provided meals and a rest area for those working at the
site. John helped provide food and other services. They
were then transferred to Pier 91 which housed all the
service agencies. John and Alice both worked in Family
Services. Alice interviewed persons who had lost someone
in the collapse of the towers to determine their need,
and John worked with victims who had lost their job and/or
residence. He had the satisfying job of handing out checks.
"Altogether it was a great experience, sad in many ways,
but joyful in others." |
