Farewell to a campus landmark
The 80-year-old brick smokestack at Montana State University is scheduled to come down this summer. The demise of the smokestack at Grant and 7th Street comes over concerns that if it collapsed in an earthquake, it could shut down the entire university for up to a year. The rest of the heating plant, designed in 1922 by Bozeman architect Fred Wilson, will remain. The heating plant will be braced to better withstand earthquakes. Some of the outside brick from the smokestack will be salvaged for future repair of the heating plant exterior. Two pallets of the fire brick will be salvaged for the MSU Art Department to build a kiln.
