Herrick Hall
Renaissance Campaign
Moving Ahead
The Herrick Hall Renaissance Campaign is in full swing. A & E Architects, PC has worked this past year with faculty, students, staff and alumni to restore and adapt Herrick Hall to the current needs of the department. The first phase of the project, a mechanical, structural and electrical survey completed in 2002, provided valuable information about ways to renovate the building.
The architects drew a final plan that preserves the original integrity of the building, yet provides much-needed updates for the laboratories and classrooms. As in the past, Herrick Hall will continue to house the programs that once were a part of Home Economics, now called Family and Consumer Sciences.
One unique aspect of the campaign is the formation of the Herrick Hall Alumnae Advisory Committee, chaired by Carol (Matthews) Roehm, '58 Bus (daughter-in-law of former professor Gladys Roehm). The committee consists of many dedicated alumnae from across the United States who wish to see Herrick Hall restored to its original grace and beauty.
"We're appealing to all alumni, especially those home economics grads who enjoyed many classes in this elegant, grand old building," says Roehm. "We welcome alumni help in renovating Herrick Hall to bring it up to 2005 standards, but also to preserve the historical integrity of the building."
The alumnae serve as advisors and ambassadors and as hosts to luncheons around the state to help tell the story of Herrick Hall. Recently, one of the committee members, Marillyn Thomas (see story page 5) and her husband Tom, came forward with a lead gift to help launch the campaign. It is the hope that their generosity will inspire others to make similar commitments towards this campaign for students and faculty.
"Herrick Hall is a proud part of MSU history and tradition," Marillyn Thomas said. "Tom and I are pleased to help kick off the Renaissance Campaign. We feel the building should reflect that our university is a high quality learning institution. Herrick is now in need of major renovation to bring it up to current codes with more efficient useable space. Labs need to be updated and have state-of-the-art equipment in order to make programs more eligible for grants and research considerations. Grand old Herrick needs a new updated look to create a beautiful and welcoming ambience. The planned improvements will more than pay off for MSU and it's students in perpetuity. Future Herrick graduates will be well equipped to bring honor to MSU and the excellence Dean Herrick stood for."
