From Alumni Association Director
Dear Alumni and Friends,
Happy New Year.
I hope that you are looking forward to all that 2005 has to offer. Make the best of it.
The holidays were fun. I always hear from alumni all over the country, and many stop in as they return home to visit families or enjoy a ski vacation. Hearing the happy chatter of visiting alumni makes the office just what we want--a welcoming place and your "home" on campus.
Through travels, the Web site, office visits and special events, I always get the question: What is the difference between the Alumni Association, the MSU Foundation and the Bobcat Boosters/Athletic Scholarship Association.
I thought I would take this opportunity to answer this question, as you might wonder, too.
The Alumni Association is a membership organization made up of individuals who attended or graduated from MSU. Its purpose is to build positive relationships between MSU, alumni and friends. The Alumni Association produces the Collegian and Montana State-ments electronic newsletter, and maintains the electronic alumni directory. Homecoming, class reunions, tailgate parties, Cat/Griz satellite parties, alumni receptions and social functions are coordinated by Alumni Association staff. I always refer to us as the Friendship Tour. Our staff is committed to doing things that will be of interest to you, keeping you involved and informed about MSU, and hopefully, keeping you connected and engaged with MSU.
As their mission states, the MSU Foundation enhances the continuing excellence of MSU by attracting financial support and being prudent stewards of its resources and friendships. When you receive a phone call from a student asking for a donation to your academic college, this is the Foundation at work. When you receive information in the mail requesting your financial support, again, it is the Foundation's efforts to strengthen and support your alma mater. The Foundation raises money for MSU to be used for scholarships, academic program enhancements and buildings for classroom and research.
The Athletic Scholarship Association (Bobcat Boosters) is a membership organization whose dues support athletic scholarships for the men and women who compete for MSU. Contributions to the ASA become scholarship dollars to assist our student-athletes receive a quality education while competing at a championship level. As the ASA brochure states, "Thank you for being more than a fan."
OK, does that help explain things? The Alumni Association is here to help you stay connected.
We want you to be involved and active with MSU. If you have any questions about one of the organizations, let me know. I would be happy to visit with you.
Thanks for your loyalty and commitment to Montana State University. Cheers to 2005!

P.S. In this Collegian, please pay special attention to the call for Alumni Award nominations. Take the time to let us know about an alumnus who deserves recognition, someone who has excelled in his or her career or in an activity, someone who has been recognized elsewhere for national, state or community service. MSU alumni are leaders. Help us to
honor those who deserve proper recognition.
