Victoria O'Donnell retires
Victoria O'Donnell, who has served as director of the Montana State University Honors Program for 12 years, has retired.
Mike Miles, associate director of the Honors Program, has been appointed interim director, according to Greg Young, MSU's vice provost of undergraduate education.
"Victoria was a dedicated scholar, teacher, mentor, advisor and administrator, who served as a role model for many of our best students," Young said. "We wish her every success in the future."
Under O'Donnell's direction, the MSU Honors Program has more than doubled in enrollment from 240 students to 569 in the last 12 years. Forty-one of MSU's 43 Goldwater Scholars have been University Honors students as well as MSU's two recent Rhodes scholars, a Mitchell scholar, two Udall scholars and all seven of MSU's Truman Scholars.
O'Donnell came to MSU in 1991 as a professor of communication after teaching and serving as a department head at both Oregon State University and the University of North Texas. A scholar with diverse research, she has published articles in a wide range of journals and books concerning persuasion, the social effects of media, women in film and television, British politics, Nazi propaganda and collective memory.
O'Donnell is also the author of several books. The fourth edition of her book, Propaganda and Persuasion, will be published by Sage Publications in July. O'Donnell plans to continue her writing and research in retirement.
