Through a gift of common stock, Edith Sanks has established the Edith Sanks Nursing Scholarship. The gift of more than $20,000 will fund an endowment to help recruit and retain students for the College of Nursing. Though not an alumna, Sanks was a nurse in London during World War II and still feels a connection with the nursing profession. Her sister was also a nurse. Sanks likes what she has seen in the College of Nursing's students and faculty.
"I went to a function a couple of years ago at the College of Nursing and was very impressed with what they were doing," says Sanks.
She also cites the nationwide nursing shortage as a motivating factor for her gift. "I just hope I can help some students get their start in nursing."
College of Nursing Interim Dean Jean Ballantyne, '70 Nurs, '80 M, sees the long-term benefit of the Sanks gift.
"I cannot thank Mrs. Sanks enough for her overwhelming and continued support of the College of Nursing and its students," says Ballantyne. "Mrs. Sanks' generosity will make a difference in the educational experience of many students for years to come."
The first Sanks Nursing Scholarship will be available for the 2005-2006 academic year.
