M Restoration Update
Contributions ranging from $10 to $10,000 from 635 donors have brought in a total of $80,000 for the M Restoration Project, resulting in some significant improvements to the area. An additional $30,000 provided by the U.S. Forest Service allowed for the rebuilding and paving of the parking lot last fall to accommodate 30 cars. Wheel stops and striping will complete the parking lot project in the spring. Extensive work has been done to revegetate the face of Mount Baldy, and the trails have been improved. A retaining wall has been built at the base of the M monument and 80 gallons of white paint were applied to the rocks. This spring another coat of paint will be added.
Last fall the entire football team spent an afternoon at the M, and under the direction of Stuart Jennings, '85 Geol, '93 M, land reclamation specialist at MSU, moved rocks to fill in empty spaces including a narrow section of the left leg. Coach Mike Kramer was instrumental in getting the active participation of the team, resulting in their awareness of where the M on their helmets, as well as the M on the football field, originated from.
Torley Aasheim, '37 Ag, '54 M, '96 Hon. Doc., the principal fund-raiser, would like to thank all the alumni, local individuals and businesses that have helped support the project thus far.
The Barb Starner pictures of the M are still available. Contact the MSU Foundation at (406) 994-2053 or (800) 457-1696, or contact Torley Aasheim at (406) 587-7256.
